Thomas Heyward Academy was founded in 1970 and is currently the largest private school in the Lowcountry.  THA is a member of and accredited by the South Carolina Independent School Association.  Thomas Heyward was the first South Carolina independent school to receive Advanced Accreditation, which is the highest evaluation given by the association - with the most recent Advanced Accreditation given in April 2008
