About Thomas Heyward Academy

Founded in September 1970 by a group of dedicated businessmen and parents from Jasper County, Thomas Heyward Academy has a proud legacy of providing quality education in a supportive, family-oriented environment. The academy was named in honor of Thomas Heyward (1746–1809), a signer of the Declaration of Independence who was born in St. Luke’s, South Carolina, and is buried in Jasper County.

According to our first yearbook, the “Rebel Yell”, Thomas Heyward Academy opened with 278 students and 12 teachers. Wightman Bowden served as Headmaster with Robert Thompson, Henry E. Fickling, Jr., Irma Smith and Patricia Padgett serving on the Board of Directors.  J.E. Horton, Gary Brown, and F. A. Nimmer were among the many influential people to help start Thomas Heyward Academy.

As a non-profit institution managed by a Board of Directors, THA is committed to academic excellence, character development, and community engagement. Thomas Heyward Academy was the first institution to receive SCISA AdvancEd (now Cognia) Accreditation which is the highest distinction awarded by the South Carolina Independent School Association. With small class sizes, a dedicated faculty, and a vibrant extracurricular program, Thomas Heyward Academy continues to empower students to excel academically and lead with integrity, carrying forward the values of our rich heritage.
