Overview
Athletics is a valuable component of the Thomas Heyward experience, and over 84 percent of 6th-12th graders participate in at least one of the 12 sports offerings.
Thomas Heyward Athletics have a tradition of winning—on and off the field. The records speak for themselves; Thomas Heyward teams routinely have won region and state titles since the 1970s. The Upper School currently competes in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). Football competes in the 1-A Region and all other sports compete in the 2-A Region.
Beginning in 3rd grade, students have the opportunity to represent Thomas Heyward in sports offerings, honing skills while learning teamwork and resiliency. A supportive school community and decorated coaches help to provide an environment of excellence, both on and off the field.
Thomas Heyward athletics have enjoyed success because our programs are designed to bring out the most in each child physically, socially, and morally. The THA coaches sincerely believe that while not every child is an All-American, if each play to peak potential, then the program will be a success, regardless of what the scoreboard may say.
The coaches at Thomas Heyward encourage participation in athletics because it provides students with the tools needed to be successful in life, such as teamwork, self-discipline, self-motivation, time management, and fortitude. Thomas Heyward Academy educates the whole person. Student-athletes grow and mature as individuals while being responsible to the team. They develop self-esteem, accountability, and the ability to overcome adversity. The opportunity for growth in all areas of life can be provided through practice and competition.
Thomas Heyward Academy is known for a winning attitude. That attitude carries over to academics and discipline. Players understand that academics are first at Thomas Heyward — they must first do well in the classroom before they are allowed on the playing field. They also learn that responsibility means more than making a tackle or hitting a home run. It also means getting to practice on time.
